South Dakota and Wyoming
In late September and early October, 2011,with stops in Deadwood City and other interesting municipalities, Keith Eisele and I traveled to Wall, SD, home of the famous Wall Drugs (some may remember a cameo mention in M*A*S*H) for another of Jim Altengarten's workshops in the Badlands National Park and the Black Hills; Teddy Roosevelt buffs will be familiar with these areas. After the Badlands, we drove to Custer, SD, to see the annual Buffalo Roundup making brief stops in the deserted town of Scenic SD and at Mt Rushmore. The day after we were in Scenic, a town smaller than some NFL football stadiums, we read in the newspaper that a Filippino church bought the town for $700,000 so big changes will be coming there. After Custer, we stopped in Casper and Cody WY as well as Cooke City MT, made our way through Montana's Beartooth highway and into Yellowstone and Jackson Hole. There were controlled fires in Jackson which made photo taking challenging depending on which way the wind was blowing but the foliage was magnificent. Our days in Yellowstone were cold and rainy, turning to snow as we left, but we were able to take advantage of windows of opportunity between rain bands.
